Mental Health

The most common disorders in both women and men are anxiety and depression.

How to Calm Anxiety? This Psalm Is an Infallible Remedy

More and more people are suffering from anxiety. Are you afraid of the future? Or is there a current situation that you feel is overwhelming you?

Catholic priest Víctor Jiménez, from the Archdiocese of Mexico City, offers this advice: When you feel affected by anxiety, read Psalm 31 (Lord, I seek refuge in you).

Do you know this psalm? Here we share it in its entirety, in the Latin American Bible translation: Books and Literature

Psalm 31 Lord, I seek refuge in you

In you, Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness, deliver me!
Incline your ear to me, hurry to set me free.
Be for me a rock of refuge, the walled enclosure that will save me.
For you are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake you guide and direct me.
Take me out of the net they have laid for me, for you are my refuge.
Into your hands I commit my spirit, and you, Lord, faithful God, will deliver me.
You hate those who worship worthless idols, but I trust in the Lord.
I will rejoice and be glad in your goodness because you have seen my affliction and understood the anguish of my soul; you did not leave me in the hands of the enemy, you have made me walk in open country.

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am distressed; my eyes are dim with grief.
My life is consumed by grief, and my years by groaning; my strength fails me amidst so much pain, and my bones are wasting away.
My enemy rejoices, my neighbors are horrified, and my acquaintances are appalled at me: if they see me in the street, they turn away from me.
They forgot about me, like a dead man; I am like a useless object.

I hear people whispering, and terror lurks everywhere. They've all turned against me, plotting to take my life.
But I, Lord, trust in you, I said: You are my God.
My future is in your hands, deliver me from the enemies who pursue me.
Let your face shine upon your servant; save me for your love.
I cried out to you, Lord, do not let me be put to shame; let the wicked be put to shame, cast them into the mansion of silence.

Silence the lying lips, which speak insolently against the righteous with pride and contempt.
How great is the goodness, O Lord, that you have stored up for those who fear you. You bestow it upon those who wait for you, in the sight of all mankind.
Secretly, you hide them with you, far from the intrigues of men; you keep them hidden in your tent, and keep them from quarrels.

Blessed be the Lord, His grace has worked wonders for me: My heart is like a fortified city.
I said in my bewilderment, “He has cast me out of his presence.” But you heard the voice of my prayer when I cried out to you.

Love the Lord, all you faithful ones, for he protects those who are loyal to him, but he will repay the proud double. Strengthen your hearts and be courageous, all you who hope in the Lord.

What are the psalms?

The Bible contains 150 psalms, born from everyday reality, from the experience of life both joyful and suffering. Jorge Arévalo Nájera, Director of the Bible and Formation Extension Department of the Archdiocese of Mexico City, explains that the psalms express the faith of the Jewish people. “The psalms are, above all, prayer! But they also express the concerns, challenges, and search for new paths for the people. The psalms are the cries of the poor and the suffering. In the psalms, the face of a God who is close, an ally, and in solidarity with all the vulnerable of the earth is preserved and celebrated.” “Among other themes, the psalms seek to answer the question: What is the meaning of life? And they point to how the people of the Bible found answers to the meaning of their personal and communal history and, at the same time, how the God of Life made himself present on this journey.”
